Kidney transplant succeeds in Dodoma

DODOMA-based Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) yesterday discharged the first person who underwent a kidney transplant at the public health facility last month after improvement of his condition.

BMH Executive Director, Dr Alphonse Chandika, said here yesterday that the hospital will continue to monitor Mr Elias Sweti’s health condition. He said the hospital’s doctors will be visiting the 51-year old man twice a week within one month in order to monitor his condition.

“Even after discharging Mr Sweti, we’ll continue to monitor his health condition until he completely recovers,” said the BMH boss at a joint press briefing with the University of Dodoma (UDOM) Vice Chancellor, Prof Egid Mubofu and Mr Sweti’s family. BMH in partnership with UDOM’s College of Health and Japan- based Tokushukai Medical Group made a breakthrough yet again after performing a kidney transplant on a 51-yearold man becoming the second health facility in the country after Muhimbili National Hospital.

Mr Sweti expressed gratitude to both institutions, UDOM and BMH for the operation and covering medical costs, saying previously he could not eat well due to kidney complications and that he had a restless life. Ms Neema Sweti, the kidney donor, said she was one of the four family members appointed to donate the kidney to his brother. She added that several relatives volunteered to donate the kidney to his brother.

“But, doctors had called for close relatives largely blood sisters and brothers to donate the kidney,” she said. UDOM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mubofu, noted that the kidney transplant at BMH had demonstrated that Dodoma was now ready to accommodate members of the public in the health sector after the government’s relocation to the central region.

He said the Japanbased Tokushukai Medical Group who entered an agreement with UDOM’s College of Health for training support to its students would continue to train doctors under the agreement which ends 2021 “We’ll continue to provide BMH with resource support to enhance health services at the facility,” said the UDOM Vice-Chancellor.

TPA donates equipment, blood to Muhimbili

TANZANIA Ports Authority (TPA) yesterday donated 20 wheelchairs and 40 digital thermometers to Muhimbili National Hospital’s (MNH) Pediatric Unit to boost medical service delivery to children. Besides donation of the 10m/- worth of items, TPA employees also donated blood to save lives of the needy patients.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony in Dar es Salaam, TPA acting Director General Nuru Mhando pointed out that the support is part of the authority’s 13th anniversary commemorations which will climax this Sunday. Ms Mhando said the equipment will ease treatment of children attending the unit for various treatments.

“TPA recognises and values the government initiatives to improve medical services... as a government agency, it’s our responsibility to support delivery of basic community services,” said Ms Mhando.

She noted that TPA is duty bound to allocate part of its earnings for social responsibility particularly to improve social services like education, health, development and during natural disasters.

“It is our hopes that the support we have provided will help serve many children who visit the hospital and easy the shortage of equipment at the unit...children are the future of tomorrow, it’s important that we value their good health,” she noted.

Ms Mhando further observed that TPA values health of the community where it operates and that of its employees, the reason they have staged a health screening and blood donation exercise to cater for the needy.

“Good health is an asset... knowing the importance of having good health, we will examine our health and donate blood to save many lives in need of the life giving liquid,” observed Ms Mhando.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

1. What is physical activity? Physical activity simply means movement of the body that uses energy. You can choose moderate or vigorous intensity activities, or a mix of both each week. Physical activity is any body movement that works your muscles and requires more energy than resting. Walking, running, dancing, swimming, yoga, and gardening are a few examples of physical activity.

2. Why is physical activity important? Physical activity and nutrition work together for better health. Being active increases the amount of calories burned. As people age their metabolism slows, so maintaining energy balance requires moving more and eating less.

3. Being physically active can help you: • Increase your chances of living longer • Feel better about yourself • Decrease your chances of becoming depressed • Sleep well at night • Move around more easily • Have stronger muscles and bones • Stay at or get to a healthy weight • Be with friends or meet new people • Enjoy yourself and have fun

4. What is health and physical education about? In health and physical education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

5. Health Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

6. SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS HEALTH

7. Difference The term "physical activity" should not be mistaken with "exercise". Exercise, is a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful in the sense that the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is the objective.

8. Strength after doing physical education Resistance training (also called strength training or weight training) is the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance and size of skeletal muscles.

9. Habits 1. Promote healthy eating in your home. 2. As a family, remind yourselves of the basic foods. 3. Be aware of serving size. 4. Make a distinction between ‘everyday’ and ‘sometimes’ foods. 5. Establish healthy eating routines.

10. 6. Praise children when they choose healthy foods. 7. Make physical activity part of everyday life. 8. Enjoy physical activity as a family. 9. Give children – older children especially – opportunities to try different sports and ways to be active. 10. Limit the time your child spends on screen-based activities.

11. 11. Encourage your child to value his body for what it can do, rather than how it looks. 12. Set a good example.
